Before submitting to The Missouri Review
The Market List recommends you verify the market is active and accepting submissions before sending your manuscript via regular mail. You may verify a market status by either visiting their website, calling their listed phone number, or confirming via regular mail that the market is still active before sending them your work. If you have recently submitted to The Missouri Review or have experience with this market, please submit a comment below. Recent submission response times are always welcome and helpful to other writers.
The editors invite submissions of poetry, fiction and nonfiction of general interest (no literary criticism). Please clearly mark the outer envelope as fiction, poetry or essay. Do not mix genres in the same submission.
Poetry
TMR publishes three poetry features per issue—6 to 14 pages of poems each from 3 poets per issue. Please keep in mind the length of features when submitting poems. Typically, successful submissions include 8-20 pages of unpublished poetry (note: please do not send complete manuscripts—published or unpublished—for consideration).
Fiction
While there are no length restrictions, longer manuscripts (9,000 to 12,000 words) or “flash fiction” manuscripts (2,000 words or less) must be truly exceptional to be published. We recommend writers familiarize themselves with fiction from previous issues before submitting.
