My feature "Up a Not-So-Lazy River" was published in the Jan./Feb. 2013 issue of HeartLand Boating. On-line research had indicated that this magazine "pays on publication," but that is not the case. I was dismayed to open up a Priority Mail envelope containing two copies of the issue along with a letter from Managing Editor Lee C. Braff informing me that I was receiving the issue copies "as a courtesy, because you contributed a story." I've been writing for a living since the 1980s and don't submit to non-paying markets, so this threw me for a loop.
The glossy magazine has a healthy circ. and nice layout, so if you want to write something for them to start building up publishing credits, cool. Just don't expect to receive any money for your efforts.
Also, this magazine has a very narrow summer time window for accepting submissions. I submitted in July and in mid-January e-mailed to ask for a status update. Mr. Braff e-mailed back right away, with apologies for not responding to my submission sooner. That's how I found out the article was being published. Nice people.
