Amazon's Kindle Single market is being used right now by everyone who fits the criteria for submission, but a growing body of work is attributable to big-name authors like Stephen King and others of his ilk. That's not to say that Singles are not accepted for lesser-known authors, only that as the platform grows it may be more difficult for new authors to compete with the bigger names.
Kindle Singles are welcome on almost any topic, from fiction to non-fiction, essays to memoirs. Amazon stresses that the submission should be between 5,000 and 30,000 words, and contain original, non-excerpted, non-published work. You are free to publish elsewhere after your single has been published by Amazon, as long as they are the first to do so. Currently, the only works they are not interested in publishing are how-to's, reference books, story collections, public domain work, travel guides, or children's books.
The Kindle Singles Submissions Policy provides you with every detail necessary for submitting your original manuscript, as well as an email address for nominating your own self-published work for submission and publication and one for idea proposals from writers or publishers.
When submitting your work for consideration, you will need to include:
Your manuscript or a detailed pitch for your Single that includes as much material as you have available, your personal contact information, and a writing sample
If you submit your manuscript as an attachment, include a detailed synopsis of the piece, and a cover letter
Amazon employs a team of editors who will review your work and provide you with a response within six weeks. If they are interested, you will be given additional instructions for submitting your work. Because an accepted piece of work is published using Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, you have the opportunity to earn royalties on your sales. Your price must fall between $0.99 and $4.99 but authors can opt for the 70% royalty even for prices below $2.99 making the Kindle Single a very attractive platform for both writers and book-lovers alike.
